Considering what’s been happening in this year’s U.S. Presidential campaign – I would have preferred to see any candidates other than Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump as nominees for that post. And if Trump does get elected U.S. President next month, the country – not to mention the rest of the world – may end up paying a hefty price for choosing a business egomaniac like Trump (including even Russia).
Of course, Trump’s decision to run for the Presidency is already proving to be a serious mistake – which proves that he’s totally blind to the kind of reason which can save you from total disaster. But then, Trump’s track record as a billionaire businessman hasn’t been perfect either – just ask everyone who signed up with Trump University, who ended up learning that it’s really P.U. (How’s that for using an age-old pun to get that point across?) And if Trump thinks that he and those in the U.S. representing the so-called “1%” don’t have to pay high income taxes – well, it’s painfully obvious that they don’t care what happens to the country before and after it’s crippled by financial recession and depression (for those of you who are still alive to remember the Crash of ‘29 and the Great Depression, caused in part by reckless greediness).
As for Hillary Clinton, while there’s no denying how much good she’s accomplished and how much experience she’s gained throughout her public life – history’ll no doubt be against her should she get elected U.S. President. It’s not the history that she might make – but the more negative and controversial aspects of past history that’s shadowed both Mrs. Clinton and her husband Bill’s careers and lives, with the Whitewater incident being one of them. And the past could have a tremendous effect on how Mrs. Clinton does as the next U.S. President – if she’s elected, that is. (Be grateful that Sarah Palin wasn’t considered as a Presidential candidate this year, given her already-controversial personality.) Then again, Donald Trump’s past is also proving that he wouldn’t make a great leader of the free world – but that’s what happens when your reputation’s already tainted by the kind of career and public blunders which could embarrass even Warren Buffet (including so-called “Reality TV” programs).
To paraphrase the old saying, you get who you vote for – and in many cases, end up regretting it for the rest of your life. Which is true of many politicians who are more remembered for their blunders than their accomplishments – like the Watergate scandal which ended Richard Nixon’s political career. Perhaps someday, we’ll vote into office those politicians who not only promise, but also deliver. (And let’s hope that by then, both Donald Trump and “Reality TV” will be forgotten for good – to the total relief of not just all Americans.)
